Mr. Harry M. Conger

Harry Conger is chairman and chief executive officer, emeritus, of Homestake Mining Company, of San Francisco. He previously served as a director of ASA Limited, a closed-end portfolio of gold stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange; Pacific Gas and Electric Company; and Apex Silver Corporation, a silver-mining company.
A registered professional engineer in both Arizona and Colorado, Conger received his BS in mining engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and holds honorary doctorates from the South Dakota School of Mines and the Colorado School of Mines. In 1978, he was also awarded a Distinguished Achievement Medal by his alma mater. He is a distinguished member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and the recipient of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers' 1990 Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal. He was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame in 2014.
Conger began his career in 1955 as a mine engineer, during which time he served briefly with the Army Corps of Engineers. He joined Kaiser Steel in 1964, becoming vice president and general manager of Kaiser Resources, Ltd., in Fernie, British Columbia, in 1970. He served as vice president and general manager of the Midwestern Division of Consolidated Coal Company of Pinckneyville, Illinois, before joining Homestake in 1975 as vice president and general manager of the Base Metals Division. He was Elected president and a member of the board of directors of Homestake in 1977, was named chief executive officer in 1978, and was Elected chairman of the board in 1982, holding all three posts until 1986. Conger stepped down as CEO in 1995 and retired as chairman and director in 1998.
