Mr. John E. Bryson

John Bryson served as the 37th U.S. secretary of commerce. He was nominated by President Obama in May 2011 and served until June 2012. Bryson was chairman and CEO of Edison International, parent company of Southern California Edison and the Edison Mission Group, from 1990 to 2008.
From 1979 to 1982, Bryson was president of the California Public Utilities Commission and chaired the California State Water Resources Control Board from 1976 to 1979. Following graduation from law school, he was one of the founders of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). He is a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School. For 17 years, he was a member of the board of the Boeing Company and, for nearly a decade, a director of The Walt Disney Company. From 1991 to 2001, Bryson was a trustee of Stanford University. He was on the board of W.M. Keck Foundation from 1996 to 2011 and resumed his service from 2012 to 2016.He was a trustee of the California Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2011, was reelected in 2013, and became a senior trustee in 2015. He was elected a life member in 2017.
