During the early 20th century, the forward-thinking minds and drive of the Institute's founders provided the solid foundation on which the California Institute of Technology still stands. Their efforts, and the efforts of those since, essentially built the quintessential and highly-regarded "Caltech" – a unique institution dedicated to truth and the pursuit of pure and applied sciences. Millikan served as its first President and Chair of the then Executive Council; Noyes, a member of its faculty; and Hale, a member of its Board.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of Caltech and is essential to the health and future of the Institute. Like many institutions, Caltech's Board of Trustees are comprised of individuals who are generally not professional educators. They are, however, leaders in their chosen professions who are dedicated and effective guardians of academic pursuits, intellectual inquiry, and Caltech's positive footprint in this world.
