Mr. John S. Chen (MS '79)
John Chen was born and raised in Hong Kong. He came to the U.S. as a teenager to attend boarding school and went on to study engineering in college and graduate school at Brown University and California Institute of Technology, respectively. He started his career as an engineer at Burroughs Corporation, and quickly rose through the management ranks. He went on to become the CEO of Pyramid Technology, Sybase, and BlackBerry. John is active in government affairs. He served on the U.S. President's Export Council and co-chaired Secure Borders and Open Doors Committee. He is also active in the not-for-profit community, is a trustee of Caltech, board member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, member of CFR, national trustee of The First Tee, and Governor of the San Francisco Symphony.
